Most Perms last three to six months, sometimes longer with proper care. Longevity depends on hair growth, texture, aftercare products, and chemical strength used. Regular trims and gentle maintenance can preserve shape and keep curls looking fresh.
When performed professionally with a thorough consultation, Perms are safe. Stylists assess hair health, adjust solutions and processing, and recommend strengthening treatments. Pre- and post-care, including deep conditioning, reduces risk and helps maintain integrity and elasticity.
Coloring can be done before or after a Perm, but timing matters. Many stylists recommend coloring two weeks before or waiting at least two weeks after perming. A strand test and consultation ensure desired color and curl compatibility.
Use sulfate-free shampoos and hydrating conditioners to protect curl pattern. Avoid vigorous towel rubbing, detangle gently with wide-tooth combs, limit heat styling, and use leave-in conditioners or curl creams to define shape and prevent frizz.
